When it comes to the beef checkoff, how can your views be heard?
You invest in the checkoff, and you have something to say about how the program is run or how your dollars are invested. So what can you do to get your views heard? Here are a few hints:
- Pay your checkoff, and then educate yourself about how the Beef Checkoff Program works by reading or subscribing to checkoff publications, including beef and dairy newsletters.
- Attend state beef council meetings, or volunteer to serve on the board of directors of your state beef council.
- Contact a beef organization, association or affiliate in your state to ask about getting nominated to serve on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, which administers the national Beef Checkoff Program.
- Participate in beef checkoff meetings, which are open to all producers at no charge. The full Beef Board meets during the Cattle Industry Annual Convention and the Cattle Industry Summer Conference each year. During those meetings, checkoff committees, made up entirely of cattle producers like you, listen to input from other producers and make recommendations about how checkoff dollars should be invested.
- If you cannot attend checkoff meetings, participate by following committee and Beef Board agenda items and reports at the checkoff’s Meeting Blog, where you can also submit feedback or ideas.
- Call the Beef Board office at 1-800-388-2333 to offer direct input, write to individual Beef Board members, submit an e-mail to the general Beef Board mailbox at beefboard@beefboard.org, or write to us at Cattlemen’s Beef Board, 9000 E. Nichols Ave., Ste. 215, Centennial, CO 80112.
