Three retailers joined veal for the first time – HEB (Texas) 125 locations, Kroger (Midwest) 1,584 locations, and ShopRite (New York/Connecticut) with a Colavita offer 252 locations. Build a Better Burger Winner Announced

Congratulations to Jennifer Beckman of Virginia, who won Sutter Homes' $100,000 burger contest. Her "Screen Porch Burger" recipe, which included fried pickles and sweet corn-basil cheese, can be found here. The beef checkoff's support is demonstrated by a beef check logo on materials, but it's only direct financial contribution is $7,500 toward printing of associated coupons, with the main sponsor and other partners covering prize and other costs.

Launching A New Burger

In the Northeast, the checkoff is partnering with Wendy’s® International on the launch of a new burger concept. The Boston, Mass., Hartford, Conn., and Providence, R.I. markets are participating in an internal incentive contest associated with the launch, enticing employees at 166 restaurants to ramp up sales of the new burger to win gift card prize packs for exceptional sales.

Feeding Future Generations

The Beef Checkoff Program recently supported a new AtlanticLive program — “Feeding Future Generations: Supporting Sustainable Global Food Production”—which brought together a panel of experts for open discussion about how to raise nutritious food for a growing population with limited resources. The entire program is archived here for your viewing.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
