Visitors play beef/veal trivia and build a giant burger.
Visitors to the 94th Pennsylvania Farm Show, Jan. 9-16, learned more about the beef and veal industries from the Pennsylvania Beef Council and partially checkoff-funded National Beef Ambassador Program participants, Rebecca Vraspir, Wy., and Jackson Alexander, Okla.
The groups collaborated to present a beef and veal learning center to the show’s 400,000 visitors. Located in the “aisle of champions,” the center featured four stations dedicated to beef and veal production, cattle breeds and cuts of meat, with educational handouts at each table. To encourage teaching moments with children, staff and Beef Ambassador volunteers asked “Beef and Veal Trivia” questions, offered a beef coloring page and the opportunity to build a 4-foot hamburger while teaching beef nutrition to the children.
During the busy opening weekend, 4,000 children and adults visited the learning center to take part in the activities. They also took advantage of the opportunity to have their picture taken with a replica of a cow and farmer who greeted the visitors in the booth.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
