An Entertainer, A Cowboy, A Cattle Producer Just Like You
Contact: , 402-856-2097;
Suggested Lead: No introductions needed. It’s Baxter Black – the voice of cattle producers across the country. Described by the New York Times as '…probably the nation's most successful living poet,’ this former large animal veterinarian can be followed nationwide. Baxter lives in Benson, Ariz., between the Gila River and the Gila monster, the Mexican border and the Border Patrol and between the horse and the cow---where the action is. And he speaks on behalf of the beef checkoff’s producer communications program…tape
Cut #1 :17 O.C...”mutual good cause”
Cut #2 :21 O.C...”kind of my part”
One of the goals of the Producer Communications program is to communicate about checkoff programs so that producers and importers trust that the beef checkoff is being managed well, and they feel a sense of ownership in the beef checkoff. Baxter explains his feelings (we’ve edited the more “colorful” parts of the interview!) on the checkoff and urges other producers, just like himself, to be informed…tape.
Cut #3 :46 O.C...”being well-spent”

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
