One of the brighter spots in the U.S. ag economy is the steady rebound in U.S. beef exports. Consumers in Latin America, Europe and Asia are responding to U.S. beef marketing and promotion efforts that are funded in part by the Beef Checkoff Program.

Visit a retail store in Japan or Mexico and you'll find U.S. Beef Attracting consumers. From product sampling to special signage, a variety of U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) programs, funded in part by the beef checkoff, are working to build global demand for U.S. beef.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
