Suggested Lead: With more news from the international front, we had the opportunity to speak withJoel Haggard, senior vice president for the Asia Pacific Region, U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). He notes the importance of beef checkoff dollars in helping to re-grow this market as the industry moves toward increasing beef demand 10 percent by 2010…tape
There have been large increases in beef trade in the southern rim, specifically the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations). Haggard ways he’s optimistic about the future of that market…tape
China also represents a new market opportunity for U.S. beef with a sizeable population base and increasing economic opportunity. Once the market reopens in China, Haggard explains where he sees incremental, steady growth for U.S. exports…tape.
Haggard believes this Korean agreement is a watershed – it establishes import conditions that very much resemble those before BSE, and he hopes that will serve as a model for other markets to get them open for U.S. beef. The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
